Gabriel had stood beside her, hearing the callous words, as he
approached. His brother was a cad. But when Eve lifted her tear
ringed eyes to him, Gabriel felt his stomach drop. All he wanted to do
was go into the room and bash his brother in the face.
Instead, he hooked an arm around her shoulders and guided
her away, down the hall, away from the Great Hall, away from the
room with his brother.
He felt a hitch in her breathing as they walked and squeezed
her tight. “Do not waste your tears on such hateful words,” he
whispered. “You are far from repulsive.”

Beside Constance, Robert grinned. “What else is a younger son to do? Other than work toward knighthood, as William and I did.”
A long-buried ache resurfaced and tugged at Hugh’s heart. He dismissed it and looked to their mother.
She nodded. “Thankfully, knighthood suits you both, though it has given my nerves a beating on several occasions.”

They ate and laughed with the others until every belly was full and satisfied. The meal over, everyone gathered around the pile of wood in the middle of the green, eager for the bonfire to
begin. Wilem began to play his lyre. One of the sailors took out a flute, another a drum. Moira and Gareth found a place to sit and made themselves comfortable.
Tonight, she didn’t want to be their chieftain, only a villager, or a pirate’s wench. From their perch, they gazed at the sea and were lost in the sound of the breaking waves on the shore.
Gareth draped his arm around Moira’s shoulders and grinned.
“I love the colors at sunset,” Moira said.
He pulled her closer, and she shivered. Gareth tilted his face toward her.
“Are you cold?”

Excerpt from To Love a Scottish Laird:
Douglas began pushing his way through the crowded room, and Catherine’s eyes widened once she noticed him walking in her direction. Her hand shook when she raised it to tame an errant lock of hair, and he had the sudden desire to kiss away her fears. After all, they were to be wed. The sooner she accepted they were promised to one another, the better ’twould be.
