A Wee Highland Predicament
He started running, reaching the place where he’d tethered Captain in no time. He stooped to lower her to the ground. “All right, my fair wee lassie, up ye get on this beastie’s back now.”
He lifted her into the saddle, swung up behind her and headed northward, leaving the River Caron behind.
“Where are we going?”
“As far away from those thieving Galbraiths as we can get before they awaken.”
“I could work that much out on my own. But which direction?”

‘You’re outnumbered, my lady, and your defences won’t hold for more than twelve hours.’
‘I know.’ She turned her head, looking vaguely surprised to find him standing so close. ‘But I made a promise.’
‘The man who killed your father?’
She pursed her lips. ‘You don’t understand.’
‘No, but I do understand war.

Lucy was running at full tilt towards the river and the road skirting round the town. She ignored Roger’s cry. He broke into a run and seized her by the arm.
She fought him, but Roger was not to be deterred.
He took her by the waist and held her tight, hands spread in the hollow of her spine. She wriggled in his arms like a dove trying to escape a hawk. He’d dreamed of holding her this close, the tantalising moments when they had come close to kissing had driven him wild, but this was not what he had imagined.

The Lady of the Forest
“Yes?” Kate tried to keep her manner calm, but dread made her voice shake. When Jamie didn’t continue, she prompted, “What about Oscar?”
“They’re going to chop off his fingers. Tomorrow, so’s everyone can watch. He’s to be made a ’zample.”
Jamie nodded. “Maude says as how the lord wants folks to see what’ll happen if they don’t do what he says. Especially ’bout going into the forest. She were cryin’ something awful.”
A wave of nausea hit Kate. She caught her breath in a sharp, “Ah,” and sank onto a stool. His fingers. An especially cruel sentence for a champion archer. She couldn’t allow Oscar to be hurt.
“Let me think for a bit.” She forced confidence into her tone to reassure the lad. “We’ll find a way to help.”
