Wonderful Wednesday Personal Blog
She has gotten to be such a big girl that I have to remember she is only 6 months old. She follows me around as usual, but now will leap onto the bed to watch the goings on or help fold laundry. (Yes, I laughed as I typed that). She scarcely fits on the couch with Ben and me, but she does her best! Freki has been big enough to put her feet on the counter for quite some time, which is against the rules, and it got her into mischief this weekend. Dad seasoned some chicken breasts for dinner and put them on a platter for a few minutes before grilling them -- and left it on the kitchen counter. No photo evidence, but there is only one dog who could have eaten two of the three breasts and knocked the rest into the sink. No way she could pin this on her short-legged buddy. We heard peculiar slurping sounds coming from the kitchen, then a rumbling crash. Yep, the platter was in the sink, along with one elusive chicken breast. Other than a bit of tummy trouble the next day- thank goodness for beautiful weather- she hasn't missed a beat. Life is never dull with a GSD in the house!

1/7/2015 0 Comments After-Christmas PostIt looks like we are back to normal at our house after the holidays. Or, as normal as two corgis and a German Shepherd can possibly be. The tree survived, but only because it never made it out of its box. I think we will put up a real tree next year. Hopefully, Freki will be mature enough to not pull it over- just for fun. I found her pulling limbs off a small shrub in the backyard today, though. So, no promises for next year.. We had a great Christmas. Our Christmas Eve dinner was a success with the family- green chile stew, sweet potato cornbread (a huge hit), home-made salsa with chips and flan for dessert. Yummy! The Christmas Day menu went to the other side of the family with smoked turkey and a prime rib roast. We had plenty of people to eat it all, with just enough left for a turkey sandwich or two. Will all the bustle, the dogs were home alone more than I'd like, but they got new toys and seemed fine with the temporary change in their schedule. If Santa was a bit late arriving at your house, well, it's possible he and his elves were delayed here a bit. Happy New Year!! From our dog-crazy house to yours! 12/30/2014 0 Comments Ben's Christmas Post(An aside: I forgot to post Ben's blog last week. Don't tell him. We were, as he says, very busy.) Mom is busy, so I said I'd post on the dog blog today. Also, I am the only one who agreed to wear the silly elf hat long enough to get a picture. It's my hat, anyway. Two years ago, mom told me it was my job to watch the house. At Christmas, that means to be on the lookout for funny-looking little men with funny hats and pointy ears. That's where I got the hat. It is my prize for a job well-done. I'd rather have a new couch pillow, but, hey--I was just doing my job. It started like this . . . Here I am, guarding the gate. It's a little bit fancied up, but mom does this every year, and it lets me know it is time to watch for elves and a jolly, round man with a red coat and a beard. Apparently, the big guy, whom they call 'Santa', has been here before, and they added his head to a wreath and hung it on another gate. Perhaps it is meant as a warning, and maybe the elves were here looking for him, but I was watching and nothing slips past me. OK, if I'm napping on the couch, I'm obviously not working. But even asleep, I will still beat anyone to the door if squirrels invade the yard. Did I mention I want a new pillow for the couch this year? I think Freki wants more toys. She has plenty, but ate the noses off two bears and a pony last week. Dixie wants chew toys. She is easy to entertain. Just give her a quiet spot and a bone, and she is happy. Oh, and she likes tummy rubs, too. So, here I am, master of the yard, elf-frightener and new owner of the elf-hat. Santa looks a bit perturbed, though still jolly, and maybe I'll get that new pillow after all. 'Freki'? How on earth did we come up with that name? I suppose it is time to explain. We are history geeks at the MacRae abode. I have targeted the late 14th century Scotland for my books, DD is more interested in early 14th century Scotland, with a Norse twist. Enter the Norse deity, Odin. Two wolves, Geri and Freki, accompanied Odin. References to these can be found in epic poems such as the Prose Edda and in the poetry of skalds. Their names mean 'greedy' or 'ravenous ones'. I have to admit, our Freki has a very alpha personality and is very greedy when it comes to her toys. Sharing is a difficult concept for her. Ravenous? You should see her eat. It just so happens, as we considered names for our new puppy, DD recalled the history for a book he is writing. The heroine is a young woman of Norse ancestry, and her closest friend and companion is an Irish Wolfhound named Freki. Our dogs have a history of unusual names, and this certainly is different. People usually nod, then ask us to repeat it, then nod again. A few ask what it means. Some think we meant 'Freckles'. But we don't mind. We enjoy talking about our Freki. Just ask us. <g> 10/29/2014 0 Comments Wonderful Wednesday with FrekiIt is official. She can now get on the couch by herself. For weeks she'd put her front feet on the seat and try to climb onto the sofa. But her legs just weren't long enough. She solved that problem today by getting a running start and landing on the couch with a bang.. Beneath the window in the little alcove to one side of the living room, is a loveseat. It is behind the main couch, and has two cute pillows on it. As I sat on the sofa, busy at the computer, ears tuned to the normal noises of a very active puppy chasing her toys through the room, it was a fairly normal morning. And then--things changed. Padding puppy feet, but they were quieter. I turned and saw Freki bounding happily from one end of the love seat to the other, flipping the pillows with her nose. She was having a marvelous time. She saw me. "Freki, what are you doing?" I wasn't upset, just bemused by her latest activity. She slid down onto the cushions. 'Nothing.' She is completely still. "Are you sure?" I crossed the room and sat beside her. She laid her head on a pillow. 'Uh, huh.' "So, you can get on the couch by yourself, now?" 'Uh, huh.' She nibbled on the pillow. "Freki!" She leaped from the couch, scattering pillows in her wake, off on another adventure. |
