Wonderful Wednesday Personal Blog
No, we don't live in Florida, but while the Northeast endures more snow than anyone can remember, and the temperatures that go along with it, we are experiencing 70 degree weather. I admit this is a bit unusual for us, but we will likely get snow and ice- in lesser amounts than in the NE- in February. That seems to be the pattern here. But, in the meantime, Ben and Freki needed the swimming pool filled. After just a few rounds of 'chase ball', Freki was panting and even Ben gave the empty pool a longing look. Since the hose fell prey to Freki-boredom a few weeks ago (it was terribly old, patched in many places, and too stiff to coil, so it languished in the yard. Freki chewed it in half), I just filled the pool directly from the spout, which Ben likes, though Freki eyed the water stream with suspicion and decided to wait until it stopped Ah, Freki doesn't fit in the pool as well as Ben does. She has grown so much! I suppose I will be looking for a larger pool this summer. The game is to chase the ball, then run it through the pool before bringing it back to be tossed or kicked again. Sometimes she just runs through the pool, sometimes she drops it in the water and pretends to be a seal, chasing it around with her nose as it bobs on the surface. I don't know why. I didn't create this game. But I am glad Ben chose not to do the same with the stuffed bear he prefers playing with!

She has gotten to be such a big girl that I have to remember she is only 6 months old. She follows me around as usual, but now will leap onto the bed to watch the goings on or help fold laundry. (Yes, I laughed as I typed that). She scarcely fits on the couch with Ben and me, but she does her best! Freki has been big enough to put her feet on the counter for quite some time, which is against the rules, and it got her into mischief this weekend. Dad seasoned some chicken breasts for dinner and put them on a platter for a few minutes before grilling them -- and left it on the kitchen counter. No photo evidence, but there is only one dog who could have eaten two of the three breasts and knocked the rest into the sink. No way she could pin this on her short-legged buddy. We heard peculiar slurping sounds coming from the kitchen, then a rumbling crash. Yep, the platter was in the sink, along with one elusive chicken breast. Other than a bit of tummy trouble the next day- thank goodness for beautiful weather- she hasn't missed a beat. Life is never dull with a GSD in the house! 1/7/2015 0 Comments After-Christmas PostIt looks like we are back to normal at our house after the holidays. Or, as normal as two corgis and a German Shepherd can possibly be. The tree survived, but only because it never made it out of its box. I think we will put up a real tree next year. Hopefully, Freki will be mature enough to not pull it over- just for fun. I found her pulling limbs off a small shrub in the backyard today, though. So, no promises for next year.. We had a great Christmas. Our Christmas Eve dinner was a success with the family- green chile stew, sweet potato cornbread (a huge hit), home-made salsa with chips and flan for dessert. Yummy! The Christmas Day menu went to the other side of the family with smoked turkey and a prime rib roast. We had plenty of people to eat it all, with just enough left for a turkey sandwich or two. Will all the bustle, the dogs were home alone more than I'd like, but they got new toys and seemed fine with the temporary change in their schedule. If Santa was a bit late arriving at your house, well, it's possible he and his elves were delayed here a bit. Happy New Year!! From our dog-crazy house to yours! 12/10/2014 1 Comment Decorating for Christmas with FrekiThis is potentially a very short post. We don't have any Christmas decorations up. But that isn't really the end, and Freki isn't the entire cause of our lack of holiday jingle. We have been tossing about ideas on where to put the tree (behind bars? in a cage? on the roof?) for a couple of weeks, but Freki has developed a great love of pulling limbs off the pine trees in the yard, and it has been pretty clear a tree in the house would delight her. Us, not so much. I have put a Christmas tree in a playpen in years past when there was a very young toddler in the house, mostly to keep the child from pulling the tree over on himself, but I doubt it would deter Freki, and the playpen is long gone. And how to explain the lovely round balls on the tree won't bounce like the tennis balls, and they are fragile and not good on the inside of a puppy? With some misgivings, I pulled the love seat away from the window, blocked either side of the open area, and put the tree- still in its box- behind it to acclimate Freki to its presence. And then we bought a house. So, in all the ensuing muddle, we have no tree. There is no nativity on the table or lights on the eaves. It will wait until we are moved into our new house. There is wrapping paper scattered about, holiday songs in the air, and cookies in the oven. My family is happy and healthy, and we have a new grandbaby to spoil this year. And Ben is guarding the house against elves... 11/19/2014 0 Comments Basket-, er, Soccerball? We have a new game. It's an old ball, but Freki had no interest in it until about a week ago. That is when she learned to play soccer- with a small, under-inflated basketball. I picked it up while on a search for a relatively indestructible toy, thinking the tough hide of a kid's basketball would surely last longer than the thin-plastic of those bouncy balls found in every shape and color, usually in big net bins in the sport section of most stores. Don't get me wrong. The dogs love those balls. For approximately thirty seconds. One good bite and the wonderful, lightweight, bouncing ball becomes a handful of limp rubberized plastic. Now that she can get her mouth on the ball and she is losing her baby clumsiness, Freki has decided this is her game of choice. Oh, she still hauls the Jolly Ball around, flipping it in the air and shaking it about. But if she can entice me or dad to play soccer--her world is wonderful. She is a herding dog with a strong prey drive. She chases the ball with intensity, corners it, subdues it with a paw, her body. She weaves back and forth, waiting to see which foot we will use to kick the ball, and often stops the ball mere inches from its starting point. Tongue lolling, tail wagging, she crouches over the ball, waiting anxiously for its next move. Sometimes I have to tell her to 'back off' so I get a fair shot. If I do not move with the ball, she stops it then circles back to get me. 'Come on, mom! Kick the ball again!' Does she know the word 'basketball'? You better believe she does! |
