The Highlander’s Welsh Bride
It was over. Prince Llywelyn was dead, his soldiers fleeing before King Edward’s army. Carys, a distant cousin to the prince, herself a princess of Wales, had picked up arms alongside her husband more than a year ago. Now homeless, her husband buried beneath the good Welsh soil, she seeks shelter in the north, far from the reach of Longshanks’s men. Carys and Wales would never be the same again.
It was time. Birk MacLean has been ordered to take a bride and produce an heir. He grows weary of the lasses paraded before him, women of delicate nature and selfish motives. He desires a wife strong enough to help lead one of the most powerful clans in Western Scotland.
One like the Welsh woman sitting in his dungeon, arrested for poaching MacLean deer.
Can Birk convince Carys marriage to him is preferable to a hangman’s noose? And will the heard-headed Scot be worthy of a Princess of Wales?
From the towering Welsh mountains to the storm-swept Scottish coast comes a tale of betrayal and loss, deceit and passion. An epic tale of honor and the redeeming power of love.

I'll start this round of Medieval Monday off with the first part of my excerpt from The Highlander's Welsh Bride.
Caught poaching deer on MacLean land, our heroine isn't very happy.
The heavy wooden door slammed shut. Carys peered about the stone chamber. Aside from a pallet on the floor and a bucket in a far corner, the room was empty. Air blew crisp through an arrow-slit, much too narrow to consider an escape route. She rubbed her arms in an attempt to erase the feel of strong hands manacling them, then, unable to help herself, tested the door. It was securely latched.
“Ffwl!” she spat. Fool. Caught doing nothing more than providing food to hungry people.
She stormed about the cramped space, her boots thudding across the wooden floor. “MacLean deer! MacLean people!” she snarled, targeting the absent laird. “Twmffat!” Idiot.

Here is Ruth's excerpt from her book, The Guardian's Witch.
An early winter breeze blew outside but the men didn’t notice, until the glint of something in the tree caught Alex’s attention. He straightened up. “Jamie, tell me about the charms she puts about.”
“Lisbeth uses them to encourage peace and tranquility.”
“What about her visions?” asked Alex.
“Laura told me she’s had them ever since she can remember.”
“What does she do to bring them on?”
“Nothing. Laura told me they just happen. Lisbeth was born with a thin sheath of skin covering her face. She’s grown to be an exceptional healer, and she is plagued with visions.”
Alex felt like the wind was knocked out of him. “A caul. And she’ll bear kings.”
Everyone turned to him.
“Caul? I don’t understand,” said Cameron.

Book 1 of the Stelton Legacy
Will he come in time or must she trust in her magic and risk exposure as a witch to save them both?

Desperate for land of his own, he'll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.
Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she'd never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.
Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can't get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they'll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

The Highlander's Welsh Bride excerpt:
Carys struggled to keep her hands from fisting and exposing the anger churning beneath her breast. The man gained everything from marriage and left her without even the ability to see her previous responsibilities were met. This was no convenient step away from the hangman’s noose, but one straight into the darkest trap. At least the hangman was honest in what he offered. All the acceptance she’d reluctantly gathered to support this mad scheme scattered like startled grouse at the first sign of a predator.
“I will not walk into this and lose every freedom I have fought hard to possess.” She advanced a step, clenching her fists tight, shoulders bristled forward. “You hold the upper hand with your outrageous law, but if you expect blind obedience from me, I will gladly face the noose instead!”
His brows plunged together. He opened his mouth, but a loud thump sounded at the door a second before it opened. A man Carys did not recognize stepped inside.
“Pirates,” he murmured, his voice low and urgent.
A common enemy.
“I can fight,” Carys stated, stepping firmly toward the door. Birk’s outstretched arm blocked her path.
She bristled. “Do not presume I will retire meekly when I can be of assistance,” she warned. “I will not live beneath the heel of your boot.”
Birk appeared before her in a swift, silent move, scarcely a hand’s breadth away. “Fight whom ye will, so long as it isnae me.”
“Do not give me reason,” she countered, tilting her face upward to meet his hard gaze.
His breath, warm and heavy, betrayed some emotion in him. Carys’s heart sped, not from the threat of pirates, but from his overwhelming maleness. He was a formidable foe—and would make a passionate defender. Or lover.

Standing, Angus moved cautiously through the corridor. Relying on his senses and training, he made his way downward. When he reached the entrance of the great hall, he pushed opened the massive doors. He didn’t have to ask where Deirdre was, for he could smell her from across the room. She filled his senses, and he longed to take her into his arms.
“Deirdre, I have come to ask if ye would journey with me to see the Great Dragon.”
He knew the sound of her footsteps and when he deemed she was close enough, he reached out and pulled her to his side.
“I would be honored, Angus,” she replied softly and hugged him tightly.
